Much more than a biography. It's a history lesson of the era.
I tend to agree with the Need Trimming review if this book has to be a biography. While I was reading the first part of this book, I kept thinking that they were doing it again - using his fame to sell a product - because it was more about the history of the era in which he lived than about him. History of the Carlisle Indian School, history of the beginning of the NFL, history of sports and statistics way back then and how the rules changed along the way, history of the racism and history of the arrogance of white people regarding 'indians' as lower class, how history is reported only from the side of how white people saw the rest of the world, but then, about midway, we finally got to the biography itself. But as I kept reading I understood why the author is a Pulitzer price winner. He goes into details to a point when it sometimes becomes tedious to read if you are expecting a biography of the guy, not a history lesson. For all I know, he seems to have done the research thoroughly, separate myth from reality I think a more appropriate title would have The Time and Life of... than just The Life of... But otherwise a very interesting book to read. I learned a lot about but then I love history as much as biographies.
Excellent
This is a very well written, comprehensive history of the life of the man. There is great detail about his family and his life as a father. It is also an insight into America in the late 19 th century and 20 th century. In particular I learned more about our native Americans, fame, and the positives and the problems of our history. I am planing to read other books by David.
World's greatest athlete spent his life divided between Indian and White worlds
Author David Maraniss writes that Jim Thorpe is the "quintessential underdog" who became the world's greatest athlete. He was an Olympic gold medalist in track and field, a football All-American, a major league baseball player, a gifted swimmer and ice skater.
Much more than a biography. It's a history lesson of the era.

Brilliant
Brilliant storytelling though a little depressing in the last half of his life (that's not the author's fault - it is what it is). If only Pop Warner had claimed Thorpe remained an amateur during his minor league baseball days doing so at Warner's request so Thorpe could play football at Carlisle in the future. He could have said all proceeds received were used to cover Thorpe's accommodation, travel and food. It wouldn't have been true but it might have confused the matter enough to have blown over as an issue. Instead he threw Thorpe under the bus by admitting the athlete's guilt and the result was foretold.
a great read about a great man!
This detailed book was written from (my opinion) a neutral point of view-a very poignant but sad life story about this athlete who bounced around like a wayward golf ball chasing the dreams and the dollars-I couldn’t put it down! An awesome Christmas gift from my daughter 😍
Good bio about an incredible athelete
David Maraniss's biography of the legendary Jim Thorpe is very good. Path Lit by Lightning encompasses Thorpe's life with incredible detail. The book is exceptionally well researched, very well written, and extremely readable.
